Egypt crisis: Update Wisma Putra 11 February 2011



PRESS STATEMENT BY THE HONOURABLE DATO’ SRI ANIFAH AMAN, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ON THE LATEST SITUATION IN EGYPT AND THE EVACUATION PROCESS OF MALAYSIANS

Political unrest and demonstrations by the people of Egypt against its government has entered its 18th day.  The current situation in major cities in Egypt, including Cairo and Alexandria, continues to intensify as Friday Prayers were being performed (11 February 2011).

2.         The number of Malaysians still remaining in Egypt currently stands at 225 people (who have registered with the Embassy) and from that total, 16 will be returning to Malaysia.  The Embassy of Malaysia in Cairo will provide necessary assistance to these students. 
  
3.         As of 11 February 2011, the total number of Malaysians who were successfully evacuated from Egypt to Jeddah stands at 7,727.  The number of Malaysians that have been safely returned to Kuala Lumpur stands at 6,143.  A further 1,584 Malaysians are safely awaiting transport at the Tabung Haji Complex in Jeddah. 

4.         It is expected that 1,010 Malaysians to be transported from Jeddah to Kuala Lumpur on 12 February 2011 on specially chartered MAS flights as well as commercial flights.  The last group consisting of 574 people will be returning to Malaysia on 13 February 2011.
