Facts: Google is the internet!

The Google Story in 2 minutes Google is the internet
The internet search engine ‘Google’ was founded by two smart mathematicians Sergey Brin and Larry Page. It all started as a college project and now it rules the internet rather Google is the internet!. The two met at Stanford University in the 1990s where they were both attending graduate school.

Together, they ended up collaborating on a paper titled The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine. Eventually, this paper would lead Brin and Page to launch the Google search engine in 1998. Google success is solely because of their PageRank algorithm. The term “Google” is similar to “Googol”. “Googol” is the mathematical term for a 1 followed by 100 zeros. Today Billions of internet users are dependent on google and today Google has all the answers for your questions. Google has totally changed the way people find information, from libraries to internet.
here’s a very quick look back at the Google story over the last 11 years. From Stanford to Mountain View and around the world, featuring many different products, starting with BackRub (Search) up to Google Wave, StreetView and Chrome. The 2 minutes video explains Google’s milestones so far would help piece your understanding of Google together.

Facts & Fun : Google Fun Facts

Google sorts billions of bits of information for its users. Here are some little-known bits of information about Google:

Google's name is a play on the word googol, which refers to the number 1 followed by one hundred zeroes. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician Edward Kasner, and was popularized in the book, "Mathematics and the Imagination" by Kasner and James Newman. Google's play on the term reflects the company's mission to organize the immense amount of information available on the web.

Google started as a research project at Stanford University, created by Ph.D. candidates Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were 24 years old and 23 years old respectively (a combined 47 years old).

Google's index of web pages is the largest in the world, comprising of billions of web pages. Google searches this immense collection of web pages often in less than half a second.

Google receives daily search requests from all over the world, including Antarctica.

Users can restrict their searches for content in 35 non-English languages, including Chinese, Greek, Icelandic, Hebrew, Hungarian and Estonian. To date, no requests have been received from beyond the earth's orbit, but Google has a Klingon interface just in case.

Google has a world-class staff of more than 2,668 employees known as Googlers. The company headquarters is called the Googleplex.

Google translates billions of HTML web pages into a display format for WAP and i-mode phones and wireless handheld devices, and has made it possible to enter a search using only one phone pad keystroke per letter, instead of multiple keystrokes.

Google Groups comprises more than 845 million Usenet messages, which is the world's largest collection of messages or the equivalent of more than a terabyte of human conversation.

The basis of Google's search technology is called PageRank™, and assigns an "importance" value to each page on the web and gives it a rank to determine how useful it is. However, that's not why it's called PageRank. It's actually named after Google co-founder Larry Page.

Googlers are multifaceted. One operations manager, who keeps the Google network in good health is a former neurosurgeon. One software engineer is a former rocket scientist. And the company's chef formerly prepared meals for members of The Grateful Dead and funkmeister George Clinton.

Good news for Egypt.... Initiative by Google

Google lets Egypt send voice tweets without Internet

In response to the Internet blackout in Egypt, a small group of engineers from Google, Twitter and SayNow have developed a "speak-to-tweet" service that lets anyone send messages over Twitter without an Internet connection. Users can tweet by leaving a voice message at one of three international phone numbers (+16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855).

Tweets sent from the service will automatically use the #egypt hashtag and you can listen to the messages of others by calling the same phone numbers or at twitter.com/speak2tweet. Most of the messages aren't in English and many are just people testing the service, but some are truly alarming.

"Like many people we've been glued to the news unfolding in Egypt and thinking of what we could do to help people on the ground," Google said in a blog post. "We hope that this will go some way to helping people in Egypt stay connected at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with everyone there."

Google's announcement comes as Egypt's last standing ISP is disabled. Noor Group, a DSL provider, managed to remain online last week as the Egyptian government ordered ISPs to pull the plug. Unfortunately, Noor's traffic appears to have trickled to a halt. "As of approximately 20:46 UTC, Noor is no longer reachable from outside of Egypt," reported Renesys, an Internet monitoring firm.
